Shelter Island Café Owner Accused of Abusing Foreign Workers
The owner of a popular café (the Marie Eiffel Market) on Shelter Island is facing accusations in a lawsuit of abusing her employees working under a summer visa program for foreign students. The lawsuit, filed at the end of August, alleges that the owner, Marie Eiffel, sexually abused and exploited 8 different employees in 2021 and 2022, stating that she frequently groped and spanked them in private, as well as in front of other employees and customers. The employees also accuse her of withholding tips and overtime wages. Marie Eiffel denies the allegations, and has recently hired an attorney to defend her in court.
Vivek Ramaswamy Says He’ll Deport Children of Undocumented Immigrants Born In The U.S.
Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy has stated that, if elected, he would deport American-born children of undocumented immigrants along with their families. However, this stance contradicts the 14th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, which grants birthright citizenship to all persons born in the United States, regardless of their parents' immigration status. While Ramaswamy acknowledges the legal disputes surrounding this issue, his position aligns with some conservative views that challenge birthright citizenship. This marks another hardline stance on immigration from Ramaswamy, who has previously advocated for deploying the U.S. military to border regions and using drone strikes against Mexican drug cartels.
DeSantis Legislation Casts Shadow on Idalia's Recovery: Fear of Deportation Deters Aid Workers from Traveling to Florida
Maria, a Honduran woman with experience in disaster recovery, is avoiding returning to Florida to help with Hurricane Idalia cleanup due to fears of being targeted by immigration authorities following the state's new anti-immigration law that took effect on July 1. The law, introduced under Florida's governor Ron DeSantis, imposes various restrictions and penalties related to immigration, causing concern among workers and a shortage of labor force in hurricane-affected areas. Many workers report harassment and deportation threats, leading to an exodus of migrant workers from Florida.

103 House Democrats Join Calls for Biden to Open Up the Immigration Playbook
103 members of the House Democratic Caucus recently signed a letter addressed to President Biden requesting that he take executive measures to help immigrants and asylum-seekers. The letter lays out several different legal avenues to accomplish this, mainly focusing on the availability of work permits to enable asylum-seekers to live more independent lives and to decrease pressure on various local, state, and federal governments. The letter continues by stating the importance of addressing the massive backlogs that exist through reducing wait times and reviewing/changing the details of the provisional waiver program that is currently in place.
Federal Judge Orders Texas to Remove Floating Barrier in Rio Grande Designed to Deter Migrants
The story of the floating barrier found in the Rio Grande is one that has been developing gradually for weeks. The barrier, over a 1000 feet long and located near Eagle Pass, is said to “pose risks to health and public safety”. Recently, a federal judge found that the state of Texas requires permission from the federal government before installing any such barriers, and ordered governor Greg Abbot to remove this particular barrier by September 15th.
Concerns Rise in Biden Administration that New York is Fumbling its Migrant Problem
Recent comments from a senior DHS official indicated worries over New York’s ability to see that its migrants ultimately find their way out of the shelter system, stating that they it is “not an operationally sound effort” and “have no exit strategy”. These statements come after the DHS sent an “assessment team” to the New York and found the migrant operations were lacking in several key areas. The assessment has not been made public. Mayor Adams agrees that New York is struggling, and other New York officials say that it’s the federal government who should actually be doing more to help them handle the crisis.
